2025 Sitewide Weed Assessment Project
In the summer of 2025, Musqua Environmental Ltd. collaborated for a joint vegetation assessment at the K+S Legacy Mine in Bethune, SK, in part of the 2025 Sitewide Weed Assessment ProjectThe Weed Assessment Project was part of a collaborative initiative led by Musqua Environmental business partner namely HDR and K+S Potash Canada (KSPC).
The Musqua Environmental Scientists supported the teams Environmental Monitors and Elder Eddie Bitternose member of the George Gordon First Nation (GGFN) as part of integrating Indigenous Traditional knowledge at the K + S Potash Canada Bethune Minesite. Environmental Surveys were conducted across a range of locations, including infrastructure pads, wellfields, and areas experiencing various stages of soil disturbance and reclamation.
Given the goal of moving beyond the conventional evaluation of vegetation solely through a standard weed control lens, the above mentioned collaborative process embraced the lived experience and cultural knowledge and uses of various plant species understood by local Indigenous peoples historical teachings. Further to above, Elder Eddy Bitternose shared traditional usage stories and respectful harvesting practices of traditional First Nation Medicines.

Findings from this visit will support the development of a 2026 Weed Management Strategy , grounded in both provincial regulatory requirements and respectful, land-based knowledge systems .

George Gordon First Nation Plastic Waste Stewardship – A Zero Plastic Waste Initiative
In 2020 Musqua Environmental Ltd (formally Wicehtowak Limnos Consulting Services LP) secured funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada through the Zero Plastic Waste Initiative in conjunction with George Gordon First Nation, to develop a plastic waste management program. We started with six (6) single-stream recycling bins, placed in the Core Area, school, and the local store. These bins accept all manner of household recyclables, from flattened cardboard, glass, plastics, and tin cans. Awareness and educational material have been distributed to the school and community to raise awareness and to help reduce the amounts of recyclable material from entering our landfill. We have purchased smaller bins that were distributed to households that were wanting to participate. Three roller bins were also purchased for the George Gordon Education Centre, to make it easier for them to collect recyclables from each classroom, common areas, and teachers’ lounge and then to the bin located on school grounds. Landfill inspections were also carried out monthly to make observations of any material that should not be making its way into the landfill. Bi-weekly bin checks are also carried out to ensure hazardous and non-recyclable material does not get placed in the bins.

Musqua Environmental Ltd. is a Regina-based full services environmental consulting firm that is wholly owned by George Gordon Developments (GGDL)—the business development corporation of George Gordon First Nation (GGFN).
